An Invitation to Share Your Story

No matter what your position is within your organization, sooner or later, you are going to be approached to write something. It may be a description for an upcoming program, a press release, a grant proposal, or something as simple as an email to a patron or colleague. For some, writing any of these would be easy. Beautiful prose would flow from their brains to their fingers and out to the keyboard, pen, or pencil. For others, writing anything is about as appealing as a root canal – something that is done only out of necessity.

First in my own life. Aspiring in the field of Library Science and Information Technology, the the fascination and challenging times we are working and living in provides an opportunity for teachers, students, and families to get acquainted with how their independent learning and life-long learning continues to grow and develop further. The use and support of school libraries and other resources they provide places a tremendous benefit for Librarian. What a terrific opportunity for those who want innovation, integrity, and imagination. 

The Rewards of Pandemic Library Work

Like many people going through their daily routine, I left work on March 12th not realizing what was coming next. I just finished another successful monthly book club meeting and I was looking forward to a weekend road trip with the girls. It was planned six months previous and we were all excited to get away and enjoy Nashville. Little did I know that my last normal work week had just ended and the world was going to screech to a halt indefinitely.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, when every library in Illinois shut down, the Aurora Public Library reached out to a local homeless shelter to ask how the library could help. The shelter said that the residents missed the library, so APL created a new branch at the shelter, bringing reading materials, DVDs, children's books, and more. Watch the video on YouTube.

Marianne Nyberg was brought to a library by her father at least every other week when she was growing up. It was in a library that she learned to read, while, more importantly, cultivating a love of reading as well. Now, being a resident of Bartlett for the past 33 years, her love of libraries has not diminished as she greatly enjoys visiting the Bartlett Public Library District often for programs or checking out materials.

Tracy Kasten and her family moved to Bartlett just a little over three years ago in order to be near family; they really love the small town feel of Bartlett, and the fact that they’re putting down their roots.

With twins Marie (5) and George (5) Kasten, Tracy and her husband are busy going out and about a majority of the week. They bring Marie and George to parks and friends’ houses to play. They also visit various libraries, one of which is the Bartlett Public Library District.

I am currently a library employee, however my story starts before I began working at the library. I have 3 kids who would request to visit the library every week just to see what kind of programs they had going on. Being an avid reader myself, I was encouraged that my kids were asking to go to the library, wanting to engage in learning, but library days were challenging for my youngest. She had a hard time sitting still & engaging in the activities that were going on.
