RAILS is inviting all Illinois libraries to participate in a new social media challenge. Show your support for libraries and library advocacy by building something inspiring and posting it on social media. By acting collectively, we can bring more attention to the need for proper library funding in Illinois and beyond! Here’s how to participate:

1. Build something using books!

Let’s have fun and draw attention to the need for comprehensive library funding! We are seeking to highlight the spirt and ingenuity of libraries through your book sculptures. Examples could include a box, a bridge, a sculpture, etc.

2. Post on social media using the hashtag #FundLibraries

Once you’ve built your masterpiece, take to your library’s social media account to share your creation. Explain why you chose to build that type of structure and make sure to tag #FundLibraries in your post. RAILS has chosen to use the hashtag #FundLibraries – created by the American Library Association’s Washington Office – to bring attention to the need to bring more funding to libraries across the country.

By using an existing hashtag, we hope to build upon the work that other advocates are doing at the local and national level. You’re welcome to post your submission to any of the following social media platforms:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Instagram
  • LinkedIn

3. Call-in other libraries

When you post about your creation, tag three other libraries. Encourage them to build something as well. This will keep the challenge going and bring a wider audience to the important issue of library funding.

Alternatives

Don’t think that you can build something? You can also participate by contacting your legislator and letting them know how vital libraries are to their community. Make sure to describe how your library builds connections and offers essential access to tools and information.

Timeline

Ready for the challenge? The week of June 21-25, look to RAILS social media channels, where we’ll be sharing our own creation(s)! Libraries are encouraged to share their submissions by Labor Day, Monday, September 6, 2021 so that we can maximize our voice. Thank you for participating and remember to #FundLibraries!
