First in my own life. Aspiring in the field of Library Science and Information Technology, the the fascination and challenging times we are working and living in provides an opportunity for teachers, students, and families to get acquainted with how their independent learning and life-long learning continues to grow and develop further. The use and support of school libraries and other resources they provide places a tremendous benefit for Librarian. What a terrific opportunity for those who want innovation, integrity, and imagination.
Colona District Public Library’s Youth Services assistant, Bailey Hager, has had a very busy spring and summer. Bailey began a Virtual Story Time in March which will continue indefinitely. She purposefully chose books to match crafts she was demonstrating using items easily found in a home. Bailey used different voices to act out the parts of various characters in the books. Bailey majored in theater and art in college so I think this was more fun than work!
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Bailey Hager developed her own summer reading program for Colona Public Library, SUMMER OF...
When the initial coronavirus shutdown came in early March, no one had any idea long it would actually last. Libraries closed with little or no warning. Books that were checked out could not be returned, new books could not be checked out, and all the programs and activities that libraries pride themselves on were cancelled. It took a little while, but libraries and librarians rose to the challenge, creating virtual programming for their patrons. One popular trend has been the creation of “virtual escape rooms,” essentially an online quiz made using Google Forms (or a similar utility) for...
When life felt normal, before the Coronavirus outbreak became a pandemic, a typical day for the Outreach Services Team at Fountaindale Public Library District would look like this:
- Begin work at 8:30 in the morning by starting the Bookmobile or Library Express Van to get the AC or heat going, depending on the weather.
- Then, load carts and bags with materials, program supplies, laptops and iPads.
- Drive to the location assigned for the day—a retirement facility, park, church or another community stop, more often than not a school.
Once there,...
Bridie Murphy faithfully attends story time with Ms. B at the Palos Park Public Library. She listens to the welcome song, looks at all the pictures, and knows when to say goodbye. With the implementation of social distancing regulations, story time looks a little different now. Rather than joining other children in the library, she watches Ms. B on the computer surrounded by her stuffed animals. The location has changed but the heart behind library programs has not.
Libraries have quickly adapted to the situation at hand. Stacks of books lay in quarantine waiting patiently to be...

Like many people going through their daily routine, I left work on March 12th not realizing what was coming next. I just finished another successful monthly book club meeting and I was looking forward to a weekend road trip with the girls. It was planned six months previous and we were all excited to get away and enjoy Nashville. Little did I know that my last normal work week had just ended and the world was going to screech to a halt indefinitely.
Up until this point, COVID-19 was being taken semi seriously by everyone around me as far as no physical contact, maintain some...
When a librarian at one of the state universities called to survey this academic library about our plans for re-opening from the pandemic, our response that “we never closed” was met with shock.
Well, actually we did close for a few days between trimesters. But other than that, the library at the National University of Health Sciences in Lombard, Illinois, has remained open to its students and faculty.
While other academic libraries have provided some remote services to their communities, this library has kept its physical space and collections accessible during the COVID-...
My library is…changing and creating services to meet the needs of our patrons during COVID-19
My library, the Kane County Law Library & Self Help Legal Center, has run a very successful walk-in program, Divorce and Family Law Help, every Thursday for the last three years. We pair self-represented litigants with volunteering family law attorneys for a one-hour legal help service. Then COVID-19 hit. We had to physically close our library due to the pandemic, leaving people representing themselves without the usual...
What would you say if someone (a library user, potential user, administrator, funder, colleague, friend, relative, neighbor, elected official, etc.) asked you any of the following questions and you had less than 30 seconds to answer before losing the interest of your audience?
- Why should I use the library when I need information? Google is all I need.
- Why should I care if the library (in my community, organization/company, school, etc.) gets funded? A lot of organizations aren’t getting the funding they need these days.
- Why do we need librarians anyway?...
