Fox River Grove Memorial Library is proud to offer a Sensory Storytime on the second Monday of every month at 10:30 a.m. The next Sensory Storytime takes place on Monday, June 12, 2023. This program differs from the Library’s regular storytimes in that enrollment is more limited; transitions are managed with verbal, visual, and audio cues; repetition and routine are incorporated more heavily with the environment controlled for comforting predictability; and there is an area within the space that allows participants to retreat without leaving the room. There is also an...
This year Glenside Middle School rolled out WeVideo accounts to all of our students. This was the first time that students had access to a full-feature video editing program on their Chromebooks. It wasn’t a perfect journey, but over the year almost all students could access the basic editing features and understand the concept of editing on the timeline with multiple tracks.
One of the best outcomes from this project was that our 5th grade STEM club created a video for the STEM Solutions Showcase for the Regional Office of Education and was one of seven winning videos that are...
As a Librarian, nothing is more frustrating than having students look at our shelves filled with thousands of books and say there is nothing they want to read. I wanted to leverage the RAILS My Library Is Grant to make my shelves more accessible and encourage reading throughout the John T. Pirie Fine Arts and Academic Center.
I began by heavily weeding the Everybody section of the Library. I wanted to make sure that the best of our books were not hidden between outdated and worn titles. Then, I purchased several book bins that would allow selected picture books to be front-facing to...
The Lisle Library District (LLD) was aglow from sunflowers and the LiteZilla on Saturday, April 22. After a year-long two-phased renovation, the Lisle Library District celebrated with a Grand Opening that attracted about 800 attendees, who enjoyed soft pretzels from Gnarly Knots and sunflower lollipops.
Sunflower growing kits were a hit and fit the theme of “Grow with us!” One lucky family even won a children’s book basket valued at $175, which was donated by Penworthy Publishers.
Enthusiasm was electric and palpable as LLD Director Tatiana Weinstein and Board President...
In 2021, the Arlington Heights Memorial Library, proudly opened the doors of its new Makerplace building, ushering in a world of exciting possibilities for the community. Since then, residents of all ages have eagerly embraced the opportunity to acquire new skills, unleash their creativity, and engage in a variety of enriching activities. With its new commercial kitchen for culinary classes and a spacious lower floor dedicated to crafting, the Makerplace has quickly become a hub for imagination and resourcefulness to many.
Everyone is warmly welcomed to utilize the Makerplace's...
I think it is very important that our students are made to feel whole when they enter our East and Central Libraries at Evanston Township High School.
My library is a place of welcome and acceptance for who they are.. The East Library is a place of refuge for many of our students. Yes, there are some who try to hang out and ditch their classes for one reason or another, and when caught, we politely inform the student(s) to please return to their class and that their teacher is looking forward to teaching them. Most students will return to class and we enjoy hearing the feedback from...
Through the power of virtual reality (VR), school librarians can transport their students to different times and places in order to get immersive, interactive 360-degree views like never before. In other words, VR allows us to become our own versions of Mrs. Frizzle from The Magic School Bus–embarking upon a variety of engaging adventures with our students. Imagine providing students with the opportunity to witness key moments in history firsthand, explore the vastness of space and the depths of the ocean, or examine organ systems from within the human body. Due to its ability to...
Getting to know the library
I started as the school librarian at Grace Lutheran School in the fall of 2021. My first job as the school librarian was to unpack and move the library back into its space. (The library had been boxed up and put on temporary shelves in another space during Covid to provide more space for social distancing.) I had also been the third librarian in three years, and the lack of a consistent presence showed in the state of the collection: The nonfiction and biography sections were old and outdated and certain reference materials were published...
Everyone's a reader. That is the message I want to send to the students at Medinah Middle School. Last year I purchased celebrity READ posters from the American Library Association for all of the teachers in the school in order to promote reading in all disciplines. It was fun to see how the posters reflected the teachers’ personalities and interests. I wanted to take this idea further and have students and staff see themselves as readers reflected in the hallways and classrooms of the school. I was thrilled to receive the RAILS My Library Is grant, which enabled me to purchase...
