Kankakee School District.

The Kankakee School District and Kankakee Public Library love to collaborate with each other when the opportunity arises. The My Library Is…Grant gave us the opportunity to work together to support KSD students’ creativity. Kankakee School District has held a district-wide Young Authors contest for many years, but we recently started promoting it through the libraries. Each KSD school library promoted the contest during school hours and KPL provided support and promotion outside of school hours.

Students enjoyed the opportunity to express their creativity and library-run creative writing clubs and writing assistance helped to hone the student’s skills. This year, with the help of promotional materials provided by the My Library Is….Grant, we more than doubled our previous years’ entries. We also were able to introduce the contest to students who, despite attending school at KSD for their entire school-aged lives, had never heard of the Young Authors contest. Each student who entered a manuscript was celebrated and those who won for Best Story or Best Illustration were provided a prize pack full of fun prizes to help them write their next great book.

With the help of the MLI…grant, we will be able to continue to encourage creativity in Kankakee’s K-8 students for years to come.

Our guest post today is from Liz Scott. Liz works at the Kankakee School District which was awarded a 2021 My Library Is... Grant for School Libraries.
